The world's first great flush of vegetative growth appears in the Devonian period, with huge ferns and forests of scale trees. Fish and land plants become abundant and diverse and there is evidence of wingless insects and scorpions.

Fishes were the only vertebrates on Earth until the Late Devonian, when the first amphibians began to invade the land. The first ferns also appeared, and later, seed-bearing plants, which began the development of the first trees and forests. As these land plants and trees spread, their roots began to stabilize the soil and prevent erosion.
