The horseshoe crab, mighty and majestic…

As I sat upon a rock staring out endlessly into the deep dark sea, the full moon cast a luminous glow upon the shore. What a beautiful night. Wait, what was that?

Were my eyes or the eerie light cast by the moon playing tricks on me? No. I could have sworn that I saw something move around the shore line. Wait, that rock wasn’t there before! Whoa! It moved! That is not a rock. That is an ancient creature of the sea from the time of the dinosaurs. A creature, time itself could not defeat.

As I sat upon that rock, no longer staring out at the sea, but at this magnificent creature I thought about how much it must have gone through and lived through to survive to this day and age.

I thought also about how we need their blue blood to survive. How we live whilethey sacrifice.

I thought about in our own selfishness, how we destroy them because of it.

And I also thought about how much other animals must depend on them to survive. Like the shore birds who come down here to feed on these animals before
continuing their journey.

I also saw that all the females had to carry the males on their backs to the shore to lay the egg because the males were too weak while the females were stronger. Well I can definitely say that I enjoyed that concept. I then saw one turned over on its back waving its tail franticly. I walked over to it and gently turned it over to its feet and placed it close to the shore. “You helped save our lives, so I’ll help save yours.”

I walked back to the rock and thought to myself as I saw them covering their new future brood with sand, “I’ll come back to this place someday, next year, to see this great creature at work all over again.”
